Take of the Week:
There are actually two takes of the week because they each hit on the same theme. Lizzy Harris wrote about how “you don’t need news to make news” and Carly Martinetti wrote about PR blind spots and how meaningful coverage does not require major news.
Not only do I whole heartedly agree with this, but it’s literally one of the first things I learned when I entered PR from the textbook publishing world (many moons ago). My first manager ever taught me a crucial mindset to have when working at an agency: bring one thing to the table every week for every client.
That “thing” could be a pitch idea, new speaking opp, breaking news, survey idea, etc. Perhaps the team decides not to bring an idea to a client, perhaps they do; but making sure that you’re filling the gaps in between major announcements has to be table stakes.
Chuckle of the Week (maybe):
I don’t know if this pitch to Samara Lynn was intentional or not, but I certainly laughed while reading it.
Resource of the Week:
The WSJ’s Veronica Dagher opened up a source mailing list where she’ll send emails about stories she’s working on.
The Rest of the Takes:
PR Misc.
- Sarah had a great take on asking which media PR teams consume on a daily basis
- I just love Monica’s piece on how comms pros can avoid being the “no police” and I’d add on that having a “yes, and” approach instead of a “no, but” is a great way to avoid this, too.
- There are a ton of takes about GameStop’s CEO, but Keith’s is worth noting because in the comments Nicole has a take on the take - and believes that the CNBC “disaster” was with full intent (h/t to Dustin Siggins for this one!).
- Karen provided a great take on the history of newswire services and a shift in her thinking as a result.
Media relations
- Praveen wrote why “Here is some money, go get us some coverage” is not a good place to be PR-wise
- In today’s digital world, Dustin lays out why the phone can still be very effective
That’s it for this week’s takes, thanks for reading.
