This Week in PR Takes - Week 35
Week 35
Take of the Week:
When Allison Braley talks, we should all listen.
That couldn’t be more true than when it comes to her latest post, The 10 Comms Commandments. There are so many great takes in this one post, it’s hard to pick my favorite.
Here are two that stand out:
1. Thou shalt not treat media and influencers transactionally. This is not advertising.
I simply love this. Period. We are in the business of relationships. While those relationships may not always result in cover per se, those relationships can at least help break through.
2. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is your reputation. Look to build it, brick by brick, over years not days.
This goes hand in hand with the previous commandment. Patience pays off when it comes to relationships, communications programs and yes - reputation building. However, I would add the caveat that whatever reputation you build can be taken down at a moment’s notice. We should also be prepared for those situations.
Resource of the Week:
- There has been an upward trend of reporters putting together pitch guides on LinkedIn, and I’ll continue to highlight them when possible. Inspired by James Rundle, Emma Thumann put one together for those in the advertising/marketing space.
A message from Reportable:
There have been a ton of takes around the press release resurgence due to the LLMs, but there has not been much discussion about their cost. The well-known wire services run an archaic model charging by word, that dates back to when all of this material was printed.
That's where Reportable comes in. They deliver the same top tier visibility, but for a much more reasonable rate.
Reportable has extended an offer to the TWiPRT community for their premium wire distribution and social media boosting (a $250 value) for a total of $500 to distribute a press release. It's ideal for startups, small businesses, or anyone looking to maximize their press release spend on a budget.
Schedule a 15 minute call with Reportable if you're interested in learning more, and looking to send out releases with the same LLM reach, but for a fraction of the cost.
The Rest of the Takes:
PR Misc.
- Are Op-Eds dead and has Substack replaced them? Or not? Dustin dives in.
- Doing my best Parry impression, Comms is like a Russian Nesting doll. This is the way.
- Domenica wrote about PR tool that is bombarding UK journalists.
- I once pulled an executive from a high profile speaking opp that wasn’t a great fit, and totally agree with Drew re: his take on the topic.
- Sarah is calling out the four alarm fire that she is seeing among junior and mid-level PR pros.
- What is the difference between a PR VP and a Director? Tristan explains how strategies and tactics play a role.
That’s it for this week’s takes, thanks for reading.
