This Week in PR Takes - Week 29
Week 29
The Take of the Week:
Years ago, as I was building out the media relations practice for a PR firm, I would also give a Media 101 session to all of the new employees entering the firm and PR. Granted, times have changed and there are more remote and hybrid workers; but the idea of using the phone as a means to connect with reporters is just as relevant now as it was then. Similar to Nick’s story in his take, I had sent a few email with an exclusive for a company to go on broadcast once a quarter and discuss their earnings; but I didn’t secure it until I picked up the phone and had a conversation.
Yes, the phone can be scary because we don’t have total control over the conversation. However, sometimes overcoming those fears of going into the unknown are what move the needle forward.
The Resource of the Week:
This is hyper-specific to those in the IT security field. The WSJ’s James Rundle recently shared his source list form and welcomed PR pros to include their clients.
The Rest of the Takes:
To have an opinion or to not, that is the question that Dustin tackled in this post.
Personally, I thought Anastassia’s post was quite interesting. PR folks often talk about when reporters change jobs, but how do journalists feel when we change gigs?
I’m not throwing shade here, but Roy’s mini-rant about trying to book someone for his morning show is a good reminder to make sure we do our homework.
Treating your vendors and agency partners as an extension of your team is a must-have mentality when you’re in house, Erin dives in deeper with this take.
Some food for thought in terms of how companies value Comms; Karen wrote about Comms leadership vs. Comms support
Bryce wrote a great take on journalists making the switch over to PR
For you Pink Floyd fans, Myles’ post on follow ups reminds me of a certain track on The Wall (hint…Is There Anybody Out There?)
Comms is certainly evolving beyond media, and we’re seeing it in more places than NPS scores as Cristin points out in this post
That’s it for this week’s takes, thanks for reading!
